UNC Charlotte Covers ROUTE 1961 (Go Niners)

READ the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Alumni Magazine cover story on Motorcyclist and Ulcerative Colitis survivor Adrienne Barnette.  Barnette found freedom from the disease Ulcerative Colitis through reading Dr. Raymond Arsenault's book, Freedom Riders: 1961 and the struggle for Racial Justice. Barnette also found an amazing story of Character, which she decided to share with her students at the Morgan School, K-12 Exceptional Needs.  Read about her story by clicking here:

Taking Teaching on the Road, School Counselor Retracing 1961 Freedom Ride Routes for Students

Taking Teaching on the Road, School Counselor Retracing 1961 Freedom Ride Routes for Students
It’s been 50 years since civil rights activist known as “Freedom Riders” boarded buses in Washington, D.C. and set out on history making journey through the segregated south.  Their mission was to challenge the lack of enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia (of 1960), which had outlawed racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines.

The Freedom Riders of 1961 experienced mob violence.  Many were beaten and hospitalized. Others were arrested.  Their sacrifices were not in vain as their experiences called national attention to the violent disregard for the law that was used to enforce segregation in the southern United States.  Their efforts were an integral part of achieving equality and eradicating segregation in the south.

One Charlotte, NC, school counselor wants to ensure her students know about the landmark bus rides as well as the “character” it took to participate. Adrienne Barnette is the head counselor at the Morgan School, a K-12 school for students with exceptional needs; and as a part of a program she created called Carolina Character, Barnette is traveling the Freedom Riders route herself… on a motorcycle.
Why take the ride?  And why on a motorcycle?  Those are questions Barnette fields each day.  Her answer is simple:  ”You have to meet the students where they are.”

Barnette who takes her bike to school each day, is met in the bus lot by students eager to get a look and ask questions.  A school for children with behavioral and emotional disabilities, the kids enjoy a very hands on curriculum that extends outside of the classroom.

And that’s why Barnette is taking the ride.  As she takes the historic ride she’s been blogging, visiting museums that tell the story of the 1961 ride, and uploading videos and pictures to a blog for the students to follow along with at school or from home.

Today, she interviews original Freedom Rider, Hank Thomas.  One of many riders who were jailed for their participation in the original 1961 Freedom Rides, Barnette hopes her students will recognize the character it took  in order to take such a dangerous journey.

Barnette is joined in the endeavor by fellow motorcyclist and world traveler/educator, Zachariah Cashion. Cashion has traveled all over the world teaching and is excited for yet another experience he can pass on to students as well as anyone else he comes in contact with.  Also taking the trip is Holly Lambert, the school’s art teacher and Rufus S. Barnette, Ms. Barnette’s brother and a Morgan School volunteer. Both are helping document the adventure.

Prior to setting out for the venture they held a school wide assembly at which students began to learn about the heroic 1961 rides and its affects on the civil rights movement. Guest speakers included Ms. Nicole Moore of the Culture and Heritage Museum and Friendship 9 sit-in protestors: Mr. Willie McCleod, Mr. Clarence Graham, and Mr. David Williamson.

The group set out from Washington, D.C. on April 14th.  The plan is to make their way through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and. Mississippi.  3,193 miles later they will complete the trip in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Barnette, a member of “The Barnettes” (a family pop-rock-soul band) has also written and recorded a song entitled “Ride On”. It chronicles the 1961 rides and will also be used as a teaching tool. Proceeds from the song go to fund future Carolina Character programs.

Barnette created Carolina Character to assist children and students K-12 with their personal, social, career and character development.  Of the program, which as featured programs & speakers from the medical field to pro-sports to the arts Barnette says,
Teachers can lecture all day about what appropriate character looks like; but until they can experience it for themselves it’s just in one ear and out the other.  Through [the program] I am able to integrate character education thorough innovative personal experiences which reach far beyond one moment of learning and into a lifespan of conscious behavioral decision making.

Morgan School Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Press Release: Character Education lesson 1961 Freedom Riders

CAROLINA CHARACTER; a nonprofit character educational service presents ROUTE 1961 to the Morgan School.  Ms. Adrienne Barnette is the School Counselor at the Morgan School, K-12 exceptional needs where she has focused her character educational program and lesson plans surrounding the 1961 Freedom Riders.  ROUTE 1961 is the story of the 1961 Freedom Riders told on motorcycles, specifically from the lenses of two motorcyclists, a school counselor (Ms. Barnette, Charlotte, North Carolina) and a world traveler (Mr. Zachariah Cashion, Los Angeles, California).  ROUTE 1961 is a road of amazing display of character traits by students; students who by far are American heroes and heroines whom faced unbelievable character decisions.

ROUTE 1961 will follow the same route that the 1961 Freedom Riders took, which were patterned after the Journey of Reconciliation; a project by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), in 1947.  What makes this character educational lesson different than most is the tool for education, which Ms. Barnette has strategically chosen to meet her students where they are.  "Being a counselor, it is imperative to meet the students where they are.  My students are drawn to my motorcycle, it engages them every day, they ask questions about it continuously and they're always intrigued by the very essence of the machine.  Meeting my students where they are means using my motorcycle." Ms. Barnette.

ROUTE 1961 will travel 3193.78 miles through Washington, DC, to Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana.  The purpose of CAROLINA CHARACTER, ROUTE 1961 is to educate, celebrate, inspire, and rejuvenate the spirit of determination and motivation within students of today to become active in their search for their own history and become active in the forming of their future and character.

ROUTE 1961 will ultimately depart from Charlotte, North Carolina after a school-wide CAROLINA CHARACTER assembly at the Morgan School. Curriculum and travel plans will be shared so that students can follow-along ROUTE 1961.  Join us in this journey back into time and experience through the navigation of the motorcyclists in a real-time/virtual educational ride along with the Freedom Riders 1961 journey to freedom.

The journey begins Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 2:30pm in the Morgan School gym.  Guest speakers include Ms. Nicole Moore of the Culture and Heritage Museum and Friendship 9 sit-in protestors; Mr. Willie McCleod, Mr. Clarence Graham, and Mr. David Williamson.

Opportunity to Excel: Freedom Riders Pre-test this week at Morgan School

2/21/11 - 2/25/11:
This week every class and every student at the Morgan School, K-12 exceptional children will be given a Pre-opportunity to excel; to evaluate their knowledge on the 1961 Freedom Rides prior to any exposure to Carolina Character's project Route 1961.

"Words have meanings and meanings impact our feelings.  Change the word, change the feelings, and if the feelings change, then change will occur in the outcome!"

- Adrienne D. Barnette

"TEST are just Opportunities to Excel"
- Dr. Abrams
Many students experience test anxiety.  That one four letter word; TEST, seems to have an impact on all students irregardless of the student's level of development and academic performance.  TEST tend to make students nervous and anxious and in some cases can cause a level of crisis to arise within the student where the only resolution they feel is available in the moment is that flight or fight syndrome.  Unfortunately, too often the flight syndrome takes over and many students seek to run away from the test by either refusing to take, walking out of class, not showing up for the test, causing class interruptions/disruptions, or guessing throughout the test.

In fact, as I think back to my own personal experiences with test, I would get nervous, get head aches, stomach aches, get anxious, and before long I would have caused myself unnecessary worry over material that I was already prepared for and knew!  However in the moment to hear the word test, I had already given it a meaning, and that meaning impacted how I felt, which impacted my ability to cope within the situation.  I got overwhelmed in the moment because of that one dreadful word "test."

Reflecting on graduate school I am often reminded of a wonderful professor I had who amazingly gave no "test"!!  I thought to myself; well it's about time, someone got it!! I was overjoyed until one day in class, that same professor asked everyone to clear their desk for.  Dejavoo; I have been here before! And too often before.. those are usually the precursor of the word "test"!  Everyone in class looked up at the professor astonished!!  The professor calmly stated, no worries, you all are about to take your "opportunities to excel," which really meant that we were about to take a test.  Amazingly though, without hearing that word Test, my levels of nervousness and anxiousness were overpowered by my ability to connect to this new word.  A new word that told me I was given a special opportunity, an ability to show how I could excel.  It was my opportunity to perform!  Who knew that changing one word changed my entire perspective, my reaction, and yes my results!

This week every class and every student at the Morgan School, K-12 exceptional children will be given a Pre-opportunity to excel; to evaluate their knowledge on the 1961 Freedom Rides; prior to any exposure to Carolina Character's curriculum on Route 1961: the Freedom Riders of 1961.

Carolina Character is also providing this pre-opportunity to excel to the faculty and staff at the Morgan School.

So whether you attend Morgan, or work at Morgan; whenever you are given a "test" realize that someone just mispronounced the word, it should be pronounced "opportunity to excel" and then just  show off.. show how you are able to take advantage of this opportunity and achieve your greatness!  Say goodbye to the nervousness and the anxiousness and hello to a new perspective of achievement!

Thank you Dr. Abrams for helping me change my language, which changed my meaning, which changed my feelings, which ultimately changed my outcome.  Thank you Dr. Furr in helping me view the importance of listening to data (pre/post opportunities to excel).  Data is always speaking we must increase our awareness so that our ears are attuned to its voice.  (click here to learn more on how to become a professionally trained counselor.)

School Counselors meet the client/student where they are! Even if it means riding 3193.78 miles on a motorcycle!

why a motorcycle, why the freedom riders, why character education ?

“Everyday I ride to work on my Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the kids hang their hands out the windows of the school bus as if revving the motorcycle, yelling
VROOM-VROOM MS. Barnette. This is why I ride, I ride for my students, for their education, for their character development"
   -Adrienne D. Barnette

Why do I ride?  It is a question many motorcyclists ask themselves.  It is also a question 50 years ago that was asked many Freedom Riders who decided to risk their very lives.  The reason I have chosen to ride ROUTE 1961 is for my students.  Being a counselor, it is imperative to meet the client/student where they are.  My students are drawn to the motorcycle; it engages them everyday, they ask questions about it continuously and they’re always intrigued by the very essence of the machine.  Meeting my clients/students where they are means using my motorcycle, that enticing intriguing piece of equipment, which grasps their attention more than any book or paper I have seen.  So it only makes logical educational sense to use my motorcycle as the tool for this character educational lesson.

The purpose of CAROLINA CHARACTER, ROUTE 1961 is to educate, celebrate, inspire, and rejuvenate the spirit of determination and motivation within students of today to become active in their search for their own history and become active in the forming of their future and character. Recruiting for this project I called Mr. Zachariah Cashion, a long-time friend and motorcyclist.  I introduced him to the idea and he has whole-heartily joined me in my character educational curriculum plan.  Zachariah has an array of travel experiences across continents that touch none other in his field. His passion and understanding of the 1961 Freedom Riders makes him the obvious choice.  He is a student of people and culture.

The culture of motorcycles and freedom go hand-in-hand! There is no motorcyclist who will not associate being on a motorcycle with what freedom feels like!  America was founded on the very principal of freedom. For some reason the idea of freedom is attractive and is something that many risk all to even experience what the freedom may feel like.  Fortunately, due to the Freedom Riders of 1961 we are able to experience the exercising of freedom that they worked so tirelessly at achieving.

ROUTE 1961 takes today’s symbol of freedom, motorcycle travel, and combines it with one of the greatest epic journeys towards freedom with the intentional purpose of character education.
The curriculum for ROUTE 1961 has been developed and established; as well as a detailed route planned; and a list of contacts that are to be interviewed along the historic memorable ride.   ROUTE 1961 is an academic mission within the context of school counseling through the use of the American history.  ROUTE 1961 aspires to inspire students to seek out history to study character within individuals and themselves.

a Great Book!

The Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice
-by Raymond Arsenault.

The Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice is a wonderful well-written account of the Freedom Rides and Riders of 1961.

The book is about the best possible map one could hope for, to travel ROUTE1961.  Arsenault, did an absolutely wonderful job of providing the facts and insight into the rider's, the country in 1961, and the people and places involved in the struggle for racial justice.

I am not too much a fan of picture books, rather a fan of books with words that allow the reader to develop their own visual images based upon the colorful illustrated words that the author has painted.

I believe, Arsenault provided the best of both worlds!  He provided pictures within the book from 1961 as well as colorful words, which engage readers and allows them to feel part of the text and able to navigate between 1961 and the present.

I would suggest reading this book as it is an excellent key to unlocking one of the greatest American treasured character historical stories within American History.

Thanks Ducati Motorcycles of Charlotte

I visited the ...

and I felt like I stepped into Candyland!! WOO!! how sweet it was!! I feel the urge in adding a Ducati Monster to the collection!! One seat on it and I was sold!!! I have to save the coins to get this bad boy, but it will be worth it!!

Much love & support to the Ducati sales-representative: he was really nice and very knowledgeable.  In fact, I have my next tour lined up there.. to test drive that monster..

Take a look at this candy.. and tell me you don't want to taste it?  Which one? The black lickerish or the red lickerish.. i guess it really doesn't matter? or does it.. its all lickerish!

Thanks, Pat Rogers Harley Davidson; Concord, NC

Knowing how to ride a bike, is great! but knowing how your bike operates and what to do if it doesn't, is perhaps the next smartest way to ride other than riding with a helmet....

AD learned the hard way, when she was out cruising on Harley and got to a sushi restaurant.  The Nigh Rod was blinking "r 128".. "it was the first time I had seen that on my Harley's dashboard!! I was confused, hadn't read my manual and I was convinced that r 128 was blinking because I was riding Harley too hard!! I got really lucky though.. next to the sushi restaurant was Pat Rogers Concord, North Carolina Harley Davidson store I ran over, looking like a "diva in distress", and met one of the friendliest Harley guys ever.. their service and parts guy smiled and said, to bring Harley over and he would take a look at him; I said, thanks... after he looked at it, he smiled saying, no worries. He set my clock, told me what everything else meant, and then explained that the "r" stood for my reserve tank and that I had 128 more miles before I would need more gas!! lol I felt silly, but relieved!! lol .. I told him thanks and I would be coming back to see him soon after I took some time to read my owner's manual!!

It's cool riding a bike, but its cooler to know what the heck you riding and how the heck to operate it!!

This has inspired me... my new lieasure reading is my owner's manual and I'm mapping out all the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Stores on Route 1961.
